I’m SO excited to share some of our engagement pictures on the blog with you all today! We worked with the amazing husband/wife photographers of AndrewJade Photography. They are absolutely amazing at what they do and seriously could not be any sweeter!
We took our engagement photos an hour north from where we live at a spot called Sunset Point. I had seen pictures of this exact spot and thought it looked so dreamy and unique. While we LOVE our photos, the weather actually was not on our side this day. It was SO windy… my hair was all over the place! You probably can’t tell as much from the photos because EmilyJade was so sweet fixing and holding my hair for me in between pictures lol. And it was pretty cloudy towards the end of our shoot and not to mention I was really cold in my outfits. Josh didn’t have to worry because he had a jacket and pants on the whole time. The things us girls have to do to look good!
Anyways, I thought I’d share some of my top five tips for getting the most out of your engagement photos. I actually wish I knew some of these things before getting our pictures done! So, here we go…
- Figure out a theme
It’s important to figure out the style and theme you want for your photos. Location is a big part of how your photos will look, so try to decide early on what you want your backdrop to be whether its nature, the city, or even at home! I actually really struggled at first figuring out where we should shoot our photos and kept going back and forth between nature spots and resorts. - Plan your outfits out in advance
I actually had my outfits planned out way before we decided on a location. However, I knew that wherever we did our photos, I wanted them to be bright and airy, so I chose outfits that were lighter and more neutral. You and your guy should also try on your outfits together to make sure they go well together. I also highly suggest doing an outfit change at some point during your engagement photos because it breaks up your photos a bit so they don’t all look the same. I would also urge you to stay away from harsh patterns because they can actually be pretty distracting in your photos. The same goes for heavy jewelry. I opted to keep it simple with earrings and my engagement ring. - Get your hair and makeup done professionally
Your engagement photos are a great opportunity to get your wedding hair and make-up trials out of the way. You want to look your best for these photos, and hiring someone to do your hair and makeup also takes a lot of stress out of the equation. I would also suggest doing your makeup a little heavier than usual – it photographs beautifully I promise! Aside from hair and makeup, I would also schedule a nail appointment so those up close ring shots look that much more fabulous. 🙂 I went with a white SNS dip nail for our photos! - Trust your photographers
Seriously, leave it to the professionals! Your photographers knows what photographs best and what the most flattering poses are. So, if they tell you to do something that feels kind of weird, just go with it! I would also communicate with your photographer any of your insecurities so they can be mindful of that when you pose. My insecurities are with my side profile, so our photographers were great at being mindful of that, even with the wind. - Have fun!
I know this probably goes without saying, but make sure you have fun during your photos! I personally love and even prefer less staged photos where you are genuinely having fun together! I’m sure there were some not so great photos of me in the beginning when I was stressed about my hair blowing everywhere in the wind. But, your emotions show through your pictures, so if you’re happy and having fun you will love your pictures no matter what.
